Newspapers, 15/08/2026

Yesterday I went into a small neighbourhood shop I'd known for a while. I've only been there once before, and didn't pay much attention.

I was on a walk as usual, and decided to go in on a whim actually, when I noticed its big newspaper section on the outside. These kinds of shops are extremely common where I live, and somehow they all have the same vibe as I remember from my childhood, only now with modern products as well. It might be the nostalgia talking right now, but there's a certain charm to them; narrow passages, shelves on walls from the floor up to the ceiling full of anything you might need, even local food brands you couldn't find in big supermarket chains, the occasional dusty, forgotten array of cans on the bottom shelf, the register, always at the entrance of the shop; and finally, the massive newspaper section on the outside.

I don't know exactly why I felt the need to check the newspapers so suddenly; though I know I was feeling a bit bored. I remember when I was a child, we used to go to such a shop in my hometown every weekend. A popular newspaper used to include one very memorable hardcover book of Donald Duck comic collections with every issue for some years. I loved those books, and had collected most of them over the years, dare I say all of them. They're still somewhere in my father's home.

The newspapers and magazines are somehow always really dusty. But even that dust felt good to touch again. It had been so long since I browsed that section since back when I was little. I checked every newspaper with that distinct plastic wrapping that included anything extra with it. I found books, magazines, unique Lego promotional figurines, even comics from small artists I'd never heard of before. Even classical music CDs, and these were even pretty good recordings! I ended up buying one comic yesterday.

Today I went back for another scavenger hunt. Lo and behold, that same newspaper we used to buy had sent out this week's issue. Included, their magazine, a book and a Mickey Mouse curation. Of course I bought it, and as soon as I got home I ripped the plastic and opened their magazine. I hadn't read one in so long, and oh was I missing out. I flicked through the pages to get a quick idea of the contents, and my biggest question as of lately was answered. "Why can't I find any local things anymore? I'm so detached from my country's scene, where can I find a directory of sorts?", well who could have guessed am I right? I have no idea why I borderline snobbed magazines for so long, it's truly worth studying. I found some rad radio stations in there, and a couple of really interesting interviews.

That is to say, in short; get involved. Even in such simple ways. Snoop around, look into that interesting thing a little deeper. It's really comforting finding some joy in the most mundane things, and we really shouldn't underestimate those moments in my opinion.
